Choose the material by product function: felt for flexible forms, corrugated cardboard for shaped scratching surfaces, sisal for woven scratching textures and wood for structural parts. Then specify composition, thickness, finish, care and packaging for the individual SKU.
Felt connects color and form
Felt gives tunnels, soft foraging products and small toys a shared design language. Consider how a larger item and a compact set could use the same palette. Discuss fiber preference, thickness, connections and care information for each item; a tunnel and a toy do not need the same construction simply because they share a color.
Cardboard creates a graphic silhouette
Corrugated cardboard supports a different kind of range story: shaped scratching surfaces, lounge forms and printed hideouts. A distinctive profile can anchor an assortment. A replaceable-core design raises another useful conversation: how the starter product and refill pack will be identified and presented together.
Sisal belongs in the home-setting brief
A sisal mat and a framed scratcher answer different presentation needs. Consider where the customer intends to use the item and how it will sit alongside furniture. Binding, backing and fixing method deserve attention alongside the visible weave. Discuss the intended surface rather than assuming one fixing method suits every home.
Wood adds structure
Wood can appear as a wand handle, a puzzle layout or a frame around another material. Its grain and finish may support a more furniture-like visual direction. Include edge detail, assembly and care information in the brief, as well as the look you want.
Bring the material and packaging together
Material selection is also a packaging decision. A folded felt item, a flat cardboard structure and a wooden assembly need different pack formats. Bring the preferred material, intended use and sales channel into the same conversation. Review the sample and agree the specific construction and presentation for your order.
Compare the specifications by SKU
| Material | Example SKUs | Details to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Felt | A01, A02, A06, B01, B02, B04 | Fiber composition, thickness, lining, seam construction and color references |
| Cardboard | A03, A04, B03 | Board grade, profile, side panels, print and replacement-insert fit |
| Sisal | A05, C02 | Weave, backing, binding and attachment to the mat or frame |
| Wood | B02, C01, C02 | Wood species, edge finish, joints, hardware and coating |
Record both the visible finish and the underlying construction. A shared color does not mean two felt products use the same fiber or thickness. For a wooden feeder, include finish documentation and cleaning access in the specification request. Confirm care instructions for each selected material rather than using one generic care label across the range.
